Write for someone arriving in the middle of a day

A helper does not need a biography of your pet before finding the water bowl. Begin with the next action and where the supplies live. Then list the ordinary sequence: access to essentials, outdoor opportunities where relevant, play preferences and rest. Use names for rooms and objects that a visitor can identify.

Keep individual food instructions, restrictions and professional instructions exactly as agreed with the responsible person. Do not replace those details with values from a generic website. This template organises instructions; it does not create a feeding or treatment plan.

Build a readable handover

  • Put the pet's name and the responsible adult's real contact details on your own private copy.
  • Describe which doors and gates affect access, including the route to a retreat.
  • Name permitted toys and where supervision is required.
  • State where equipment belongs after use, including leads and interactive string toys.
  • Leave a line for what actually happened and anything the next helper should know.

Make permissions concrete

“Likes company” is less useful than an instruction about how to offer it. Explain whether the helper should wait for approach, what familiar game can be offered, and where the animal can opt out. If children visit, include the agreed supervision arrangement and a separate space when an adult cannot actively supervise.

Avoid relying on a verbal instruction that only one member of the household heard. Walk through the sheet with the person who will use it. Let them find the equipment and point out any ambiguous wording before the first handover.

Keep the sheet current

Date your own sheet when you update it. Cross out an obsolete instruction rather than leaving two versions that conflict. Use a separate private record for sensitive details; the browser planner is designed for ordinary task notes, and the printable copy is yours to store appropriately.

A useful care sheet is short enough to read and specific enough to act on. If it becomes crowded, separate a daily page from occasional tasks instead of shrinking the type until nobody uses it.
